Whewww, it has been a long, long while since I posted my last blog. This past time of putting what's in our mind into words is slowly dying inside me, but seeing my previous posts kind of woke me up to start writing again. I cannot let that happen just yet. But where should I start?

Glad that when I clicked "create new" posts, I can see from the right hand part of the screen the word "Labels", and from there I remember that topics I once indicated. This just narrows down my choices on what should I write for "da return of the cambak"- as the famous visayan slang phrase goes.

So, I choose "Picachu". Ops, not that one. Just carried away of the new hit app now Pokemon Go which most of my friends are into. I like to start with "Gadgets and other stuffs" as I have bought a few items already for my outdoor adventures. But I will make this promise of writing one blog per item so I can yet again practice speaking out my mind even though nobody's watching. I shall make this official that from now on, i will never edit my blog once I post it. That is to keep it as honest as to how my heart and mind feels it to be the moment I'm writing it.

I got a new Suunto Core - All black watch that will keep me in check with the terrain's elevation (the only feature that I was very keen of) during one of my hiking and climbing activities. In consolation to that feature, it also keep me in check with the present temperature and barometric pressure. It will also keep me in check with my current position (of course with a map) as it has a built in and working compass. I need to practice using these features though in the future. It has a very sleek and sophisticated design that can adjust to every situation. It best even for everyday use. My wife always nag if I buy new things which she thought is not practical but this time it was short lived as she was happy to have my old watch for herself. :-) Until my next post.

I can feel the increasing pressure of TNF100 2014 so I decided to join this year's HLK Marathon. It's just days before that biggest event yet (in my running bucket list). Once again I'm crossing my fingers in the hope of actually finishing it within cut-off time. My training is never been that good once again. On and off with no proper training schedule being followed. So as part of the so-called training I should say, I registered on the last day of the registration period.

As per Meyux, I should at least experience more than 24 hours of being awake and see how my body responds to it. So there's no better way to do it than join a marathon right after my work shift.

I woke up @ 7 AM that day, did not bother waking my wife thinking that additional errands might be asked from me and I could possibly missed the 1st shift at work. I brought my "running stuff" to work but ended up going back home since I left my headlamp and blinker (silly me). I felt very sleepy when I arrived home around 7PM and the kids just finished their dinner. I asked them to take a bath then go up so we could sleep together.

I originally planned to meet up with my brother at the starting line so he could take my motorcycle to their house. But at the last minute, he advised me to fetch him instead and we would go together to Parian area where the race briefing was held. There I received my shirt, bandana and was asked to signed the check-in list. It was just about 15 minutes before gun time. I can see people strangely looking at me seemingly puzzled about my get-up. I was wearing our fire brigade pants and was carrying a trekking pole while testing my new Camelbak Ultra LR which coincidently arrived that day from Manila (thanks bro Dondon). Then goes the gun start.

I was probably the last runner to cross that intersection near Metro Colon (<strike>eager to see if John Domingo did capture that on his camera, he's not posting the pictures yet in FB though</strike>). I originally planned to run the whole duration at a slow pace. I enjoyed every part of the run as if I really did have enough road run practice. I made a stopover just few meters after Naga City's church to have a bread and Mountain Dew. I was so hungry during that time. Then hit back the road as soon as I was done.

Thanks John Dominggo, naa jud.. Karaan lang. :-)

I am very familiar of the route. I also came from the south of Cebu so for the whole duration of the race the landmarks and locations were playing in my mind. I never felt sleepy but had to adjust my hydration pack all the time. The added weight in my hand (pogo stick - per Tony) almost startled a back+shoulder cramps but felt glad that it did not progressed.

All goes well until I felt like my whole body was overheating, more around my back and my thighs. As soon as I saw the next water station, I asked for a very cold water (fortunately they have it). This was already near the San Fernando - Carcar boundary. I am so close to the finish line and it was still early, I thought. Then the competitive side of me started taking over (not as planned though). I started counting the number of runners I was able to pass-by. It climbed up to 12 when another race surprise hit me. I should have attended the pre-race briefing or read the details in FB (I just knew it though). We were asked to make a turn away from the highway to make that minimum 42K distance for a marathon. I lost my momentum at this point and all I was thinking and asking from the barrio folks was if the turning point is near. Those 12 runners should have increased but instead I was out-ran by 4 of them which I wasn’t able keep up again.

I finished # 68 with a time of 6 hours, 5.17 minutes but not without repositioning my bandana for a possible photo shoot at the finish line. I was just happy that I never felt pain or being injured and still feeling stronger ever if I've been up for quite some time.

Thank you CUC once again for the very well-organized race. Tested through time.

Personal lessons-learned:

- wearing non breathable pants in wrong after all (even at night time). Need to find a good calf sleeve instead.

- I might have to erase it from my original plan to use trekking pole. I'll just find a nice stick that I could threw anytime.

- Need to do more core exercises.

- I haven't included in my training the proper time of food and electrolytes intake techniques.

- Need to familiarize more on using my hydration bag.

Advise to all support vehicles. Next time do not shadow your runner, leap-frog instead. (You save gas plus you save your runner's life)

1st time to own one that is specifically for running. Got this on March 3 bought by my brother from ROX Port Bonifacio. I think we'll have long running years with this durable vest.

1st time I used it wasn't on a practice run but on an actual marathon. I had to retighten the strap frequently which made me felt betrayed by the hype of it from other reviews but noticed later that the strap were not evenly balanced. What I like about the vest so far is you won't feel that you're acually carrying a heavy load (2 -L max). I still need to familiarize this one though especially on a trail course since the climbing and rolling terrain will affect the performance of this vest I guess. I will continue adding more & more reviews of this hydration pack with dates and new experiences soon and with pictures too. (4/03/2014)

I bought this last December 14, 2013 on my 2nd climb to Osmeña peak for 2013. I was even bringing my day pack when I bought it and eventually stuffed the emptied bag to it.

I got the green colored one and it comes with a rain cover, which was very new to me. I was very happy that the salesman emphasized that feature because I end up using it before we reached the peak. It was "raining cats & dogs".
After the typhoon has calmed down, Ronnel went to his province where it was one of the areas that was badly hit. And so his training was halted but he did not tell me in advance that he won't be joining the run anymore.

Two days before the event he decided to sell his slot for less than half the price. I was hesitant at first but since I thought I had enough experience, then I might as well make this one as an LSD. But what makes this a very dumb move was to play 4 basketball games 6-hours before gun time. I knew that I was into this very bad situation and thought to just enjoy the run... but it wasn't. I was tired already before the 21K mark though I was having a good pace for a sub-5 finish. Then sleepiness got the better of me when I reach the 30K mark. As much as I want to end the agony by moving at a faster pace, I don't have the strength anymore. Until I found myself during run-walks as if I was doing an ultramarathon. Luckily I survived by finishing with a time of 5:21:42.

For the 1st time in my 8 years of stay in Lear that I was able to beat Edmund, MEPZ current champion in tabletennis. Though it was just a friendly match but for me it was a testament of how far I've gone as a table tennis player. It was also a consolation since I just lost the semi-final round and have to wait for my opponent in the battle for 3rd place. The one who beat me would be my everyday inspiration from now on. I still have to beat him in a match. It was not long ago that many of the top players here wouldn't play with me because I'm not good/competitive enough. Hope I won't be satisfied with this achievement and would try my best to learn everyday.

BTW, I was using a PAN ASIA Butterfly hobby bat. It was not a very high end paddle but works well for me than the customized ones.

It’s one sport that I really love doing. I have no formal training, don’t even know the famous players of this sport but have have this bizarre yet effective style that works pretty well. Re-learning the basics thru YOUTUBE and practice with officemate indeed improved my game.

Way back when I was in the fourth grade, my family moved into our new house. I was first introduced to this sport (much more of a past time) by the carpenters building our home. Back on those days, the paddle/racket we had was made from cut-out “plywood”. I can still remember the brand of our pingpong ball “Pioneer” and it worth 7php back then. It gets easily broken not because it was made of weak material but most likely because of the uncontrollable wooden pounding… hahaha.. The net was made of the so called “net bag” while our table tennis table had a way out-of-standard dimensions. I would have loved to continue playing pingpong, yet my brothers easily got bored of it and played other games. To make the story short, I transferred to the city when I was in high school. I couldn't recall a single moment that I ever held a racket within that four-year stay. When I was in college, our PE class should have been allotted for table tennis. However, during that semester, one class was offered with "Arnis". And unfortunately, I was in that class. The company where I first employed had this nice table tennis amenities where most of the players had their own customized paddles. I now learned to use them and understood that a good table tennis player always beats the average player but great players beat great players because this have those more advanced rubbers. Hope to customize my own soon. JJJ

By the way, I just thought of writing this blog because I just won my first 2 games in our company’s table tennis tournament. I was trying to understand how I come to love this sport . Then I realized that it just fits my character. The very reason why I loved long distance running might also be the reason why I love PingPong. I just don’t get BORED easily. Doing things over and over and over and over maybe weird to some, but not to me. I still play pacman or tetris like I just learned how to the play the game. So that’s it, just sharing some discoveries I found about myself. Hope I could quality for the semis or even win the tournament, fingers crossed.

I cannot recall the reason how we got to know these guys during our first climb at Osmeña, nor can I remember most of them but it was a great experience.

We had a different route then. From Brgy Basak of Badian, we traversed for 6 hours and reached the peak on late afternoon. Without setting the tent yet, I got these great shots.

Now 5 years after (never thought it was that long), my officemates had planned an idea of traversing from Osmena Peak to Kawasan falls then an overnight stay at my hometown, Moalboal. None of us were familiar of the route so I asked another officemate whom I knew had some great climbs and maybe he could still recall the direction/s. To my surprise he was more than willing to go with us on that date.

Most plans don't really pan out. Of the 19 interested heads, only 10 were able to actually bring their bodies along with their heads at the planned meeting place. Anyway, we rode a van @ Citilink then a habal2x from Dalaguete Poblacion to Mantalongon market. There we had out lunch and bought some stuffs for the night.

It was an hour and half trek from Mantalongon market to the well-known peak. Some of us were already tired but as soon as we arrived at the campsite all those were replaced with a great feeling of relief and unexplained happiness. Again I had my pictures taken at the peak... After 5 long years, I was there again standing high above everyone else in the island of Cebu.
As advised from an ultrarunner and a certified mountaineer friend, I bought this headlamp that I could use on my future climbs and night runs. I'm glad it was on sale @ 20 % off and I was able to able to save more than 400php. Go figure.

Later did I knew, it was very useful also on my bike night rides. It was worth the price and I'm going to take good care of it (ana jud na basta bag-o pa). It's been a nice companion so far especially during our Dalaguete-Badian Traverse Climb last August 24.
Hours before my 2nd century run, things did not came the way I planned it. Team Hinanggaw (Me, Henry and Toto) have already planned everything and the assembly time @ Henry’s residence was at 2 PM or earlier. When me and my wife left home, I knew that we would be just on time to be there but a lot of things went wrong. First, it was the misaligned chain of my motorcycle that needs a mechanic to fix it. I don’t have the tools then and don’t want also to exert effort that may tire me more. Once it was fixed, we were set to arrived 30 minutes late already I just tried to focused on driving safely. Just about 5 kilometers or so, I felt that the tires were rolling awkwardly, alas now I had a flat tire. Oh my, “was it a sign that something not good might happen during the race?,” I uttered.
JIT (Just-in-Time)
Our trip came smoothly and easily after but we were less than 10 minutes from gun time. After checking in, we were released without saying the final instructions to our support crew (my Wife Rina, Nancy, Scarlet with hubby Opaw). I just whispered to my wife to buy some rice and fried chicken since I haven’t take my dinner yet. I came out with a plan to run 14 minutes and then totally rest for a minute since I still have difficulty walking on KAI. In less than 2 hours, I was being served by our support crew more than the times I was served during Leg 2. This run became easier because of our superb support team. As if they already knew what we need at every stops. Their constant cheering and encouragement for us to enjoy the race was very helpful. Everything went fine, except that my foot was very painful. I suspected that maybe because I gained a lot of pounds as compared to my previous century run. So instead of the original plan of changing my footwear at Km 50, I had to revised it and deiced to change at 30 KM to my new balance shoes. At first I could feel some resistance at the inner side of my foot caused by a shoe not designed for flat footed runners but I'm glad that it was bearable and barely felt it at the later part of the run. Everything goes well until it was between KM 35 to 40 that it started drizzling. My wife advised to bring the raincoat because it would rain at anytime.
the COLD DAWN
Henry was already ahead big time (27 minutes ahead), me and Toto were catching up but we were not pacing each other because of preferences and styles. I run the 1st 14 minutes then walked for a minute (I had my shoes on) while he prefers to run in spurts with long power walks. At KM 40 I introduced Anthony Nicart to Toto. They asked if we can go together but I declined saying that their style will kill me. Toto and Nicart’s styles were very similar. Then it started raining hard and I had to put my raincoat on. I still used the same strategy even if it was raining really hard. My concern now was having blister because of wet socks and shoes. Continuing with my preferred style, I could not see Toto and Nicart anymore when I came near 50K mark. I wanted to stay in the area longer if not for the number of people at the tents. After eating pospas, I was back in my same running pace but this time walking all the inclines and hills. I did not walk on downhills and flat grounds since I knew that sooner I will be walking the 6KM stretch dreaded uphill. That plan worked well but the course was punishing my hams slowly and steadily. Nearing the 60KM mark, some runners were forced to run to get away from the sliding mud and rocks from the other side of the road. I heard one runner was even hit by the rolling rocks but refused to quit. Thanks God. At KM 60 aid station, I asked for a hot coffee but all they could offer was cold water and Gatorade. I ask one guy who offered a Kopiko 3 in 1 sachet that I will just add cold water to it in the hope of relieving my sleepiness. It was past 3AM then.
The next 2 kilometers was a memorable place for me. It was the place where I proposed marriage to my wife. I was also excited to see the GOTO house where I ate my breakfast during the 1st Cebu Ultramarathon way back in 2010. Those areas where coincidently just few kilometers where I got my first major injury at steep downhill to Cebu – Balamban boundary. I was with batman (shirtless man with his underwear outside his compression short) in that descent. I just tried the things I learned when running downhill (which i got courtesy of Meyux Cordova during our Habagat Ultra). Arrived @ Km 70 where a cup of hot noodles and Henry’s so called SHOTBLOCK were available. Henry was now just 3-5 minutes ahead of me. I stayed longer in the area munching my favorite mixed nuts + chocolates made by Henry. I really love that one. 30KM to go and I’m on pace of having a good chance of earlier that 18hr finish (my estimated time to arrive).
80KM – you always slow me down
After 2KMs or so, the downhill to uphill ratio now seemed to be even. I used the same strategy which was to run the downhill and flat ground then walk the uphill. I cut short stops and rest time. At one point I even demanded the support team to make it faster and they seemed in shocked why I was in a hurry. I was thinking of outrunning at least 30 runners before the finish line. It really backfired. I was running the all the downhill of Gov. Leyson Drive which I thought to be a kilometer glide but I miscalculated it. It was way longer than I expected. Before I was able to make the ascent on the 80KM mark, I was already drained and exhausted. That’s when laziness hit the second time around. Coincidently the same with what happened during my 1st century run, at 80KM mark. I started eating more than I should and rested way more. I don’t have the drive anymore.
<u1:p></u1:p>

Enjoyable LAZINESS
When I saw Toto and Nicart coming, I was spiritually depleted. I tried to paced them at first when I sensed that Toto was getting faster. The competitive fire in me was awaken and I continued pursuing him until we hit the 1st climb going to Mountain View. We talked a lot, Nicart had blisters suffered from the cotton socks he used. They gave me some chocolate candies. After a while Toto’s brother in-laws came, he said they prepared some hearty breakfast/lunch for him. Toto suggested that we should eat together and don’t mind of the time since we have pretty much time left. It was this time that a lot of runners were able to pass us. It was more than half an hour of eating and chatting until my stomach crumbled. I got to deploy to go anytime soon. We asked several households before a good Samaritan offered his own toilet. Unfortunately they have no water nor toilet paper to use and I just managed some rain water gathered during the evening rain. Saw some mosquito pupae also but didn’t care. I just have to go bombing.
<u1:p></u1:p>
We walked another few meters when we saw our support team. We got some stuffs and asked then to wait for us at the finish line. They were uncertain if they should comply but we assured them that we’re OK and we’ll just be walking up to the finish line. I have always dreaded walking in steep downhill that I suggested that we should run down to Willy’s Place. Nicart had problem catching up but he was always been a warrior and did not bothered complaining. At last we reached 90KM mark. It was the most “laysho” station were a medical team manned the station. I just heard that 2 ladies were declared DNS and were attended immediately because they were shivering .
<u1:p></u1:p>
ITS ALL IN THE MIND
The last 10K was a mental thing. I tried to find some pain reliever because I thought my sole were already blistered but Toto suggested that I just need to focus and overcome any pains felt. I agreed to him only if he will not overtake me. So for a kilometer or so, I ran like I was not feeling the pain in my feet. I did not bother to look back at Toto since I thought he was following me. But he was so busy talking to a runner from TOES team so I decided to go on and wait for him at near the finish line. I reached G6 team near former Cesar Foodland’s place and they offered me a glass of beer which I gratefully accepted. It was ice cold, I should have asked for another one. Then I reached the foot of the last short uphill were Toto’s in-laws were drinking beer also. I had another glass while waiting for Toto. Nicart was also waiting there and he explained that he need to go ahead because his foot was really painful to walked on.
The 3 warriors arrived locking arms with me at the middle. I was really sleepy by then that my eyes can’t lie anymore. As we approached the finish line, ma’am Lulu came to me and asked me if I was OK. I starred at her and realized that she was very serious and I just realized that she might thought that Toto and Nicart were helping me stand and reached the finish line. So I smiled giggly and assured her that I was fine. I received my medal, embraced my wife and took a pose at the finish line.
I joined last July 6's 50K ultramarathon with 2 of my colleagues as our final LSD for CUC 100K 3rd Leg on July 27th. What was supposedly an LSD became very challenging for me to even finish. Maybe because I did not have proper long distance runs prior to the event. Or maybe because I was forcefully pacing with my colleagues which I was not used to.

There was a point in the race that I had spurts of good feeling then suddenly felt so tired that I even second-guessed to join Leg 3 or not. I definitely knew that I was going to finish the race, but the idea of feeling so burned out was my main concern. The long walk breaks did its tool on me again like what happened in Siquijor but this time I was to catch up with my friends. Coming 3rd Leg, I will focus of running my own pace even if it means that I will have to run alone. I can now attest that it is better to have a full stop instead of walking, it works for me best.
The best part of the race was the bonding time with officemates. Two of our colleagues where from the island. My most challenging ultramarathon run so far. Going to battle half-prepared could have cost me a DNF in this one. Luckily I was able to adjust and made daring moves that propelled me to complete the route.

Well, let me recall the reason why I joined this UltraRun. I was filled with enormous excitement and eagerness but missed the important details about the run. Of the 4 islands comprising Region VII, Siquijor was my last roadblock to one entry in my bucket list (@ least a marathon per province). Cebu : lots of them, Negros Oriental - 1st Dumaguete Adventure Marathon, Bohol - 1st Bohol 80K Ultramarathon. An to finish this 75K run, that would be a big achievement at least for myself. Unfortunately, I did not read the blog from Bald Runner (which by the way, I'm following) that it was a “self-support” run. I just accepted the event invitation from Kikai Legaspi in FB, who also registered for this run but had to back-out to rest from at least 2 ultras that past 2 weeks. I did not inquire about how to get there, thinking that I'd be bringing my motorcycle and my brother (as my support crew) during the event. So when the eve of the run came, I asked a good friend from the island about the schedule of the "roro" ferries but told me that it's not a sure event that there would be a trip on that day.

What???????? How am I going to get there? He told me a ferry that cost at least 1000 php does have a trip @ 3PM that day. What?????? 1000??? I even have troubles getting my registration fixed and now I have to spend 1K for the one way trip alone? How about the return trip? This time I started feeling the pressure, but had to go anyway. So I told my brother about the change of plan and have to go to Siquijor alone. Good thing I have a school ID (Post Grad) which help saved about 125Php form the fare.

The trip to Siquijor was very timely yet funny. I was able to go to the islands of Bohol, then Dumaguete and finally Siquijor. Arrived at Siquijor, Siquijor (yeah, that’s the name of the town) around 10PM only to find out that there were no people at the starting area and that the people there aren't even aware that an Ultramathon event is happening the next day. Since, I've read about sir Jovie's post from the internet that he'd be staying at Replica Manor, I ask a lady if she knew about the place. Called a tricycle to get me to the place and asked if 20Php is OK since I have a very tight budget. He agreed along with a frown face.

Got to Replica Manor, ask the owner if a certain General made a reservation there. He confirmed but told me that they were now resting. He also told me that they're already full (which I don't have intension anyway of pulling another 800php for the night). So I asked him if I stay at the dining area and would just pay a discounted fee but he humbly offered ( or did he?) a bed, fan and some beddings. At first I thought it was free but upon leaving he told me to pay only for the bedding's maintenance. I agreed since the next morning would be another war so I had to sleep even for the remaining 3.5 hours would make a big difference.
Replica Manor (From Sir Jovie's blogsite)

While lying, my tears started rolling. What the hell am I doing? After a very long trip, I had to beg for a place to sleep and I started missing my wife and kids who were always my source of courage through difficult times. Char! Honestly I felt very sad, then nature was with me on this one. Rain started pouring, that of course made me laugh after I called up my wife and shared my experience.

I woke-up at 2:30AM and ordered a 120Php breakfast meal. Some guys from Manila were already awake, had a small chat until they told me that it was a “self-support” run, with no water stations and no ambulance. BANG!!!!! Will the bad news stop? I can't blame anyone but myself. I was used to CUC's style of UltraRuns but it made me think also to prepare for the worst next time around. It's also an eye opener for me but I knew I need to adjust. I won't be able to use my shoes because there's no drop-off stations (self-support gani!!!) so I have to leave most of my things at the resort. I bore a hole from a small havianas bag and made it my running bag. Inserted a plastic straw to immobilized the bag (a bit) from uncontrolled swinging. Had to fixed my mind that there's no turning back, run now and cry later.

I was expecting at least 5 more CUC friends at the starting area but met only Soybitz(Minglanilla) and TakasBahay (Lapu-lapu also) from Cebu. They looked very prepared, I begun feeling pity of myself but had to enjoy the run anyway.
I was wearing Kai sandals (Thanks Cob) for the whole duration of the race. See the line at the back of my race bib above? That's the improvised belt I made out of a plastic straw. Imagine the pain/mark that the strap would leave near my shoulder if I had this bag all along in my 14 hours run.

I started slow just like in my previous ultras. Stayed at the middle pack for the 1st 10K until Mr. Sun started breaking in. Some of the runners were able to see my situation and told me that it will hurt soon. Until I started feeling so uneasy and promised that if someone would offer again to let me place my bag in their van, I would not hesitate to say "Yes". I was able to run along with some runners from DARS (Dumaguete runners) whom I have shared my story. A policeman from Siquijor named Bruce also was supported by his brother and sister in law (who also had a father Running, from DARS) suggested that I should place my bag in their support vehicle which I happily agreed. From then on, we were running alongside. They even offered to share lunch with them. As much as I’d want to refuse, I was now considered by them as one of their own runners.

The long walk breaks make my feet very painful. The KAI sandal indeed was not designed for walking. For the last 20 KM the group decided to walk it off because one of their runner whom they called "attorney" had cramps and could not run longer. It was me who suffered from that plan. So instead, I'd ran for about 2 kilometers and wait for them then ran again for the next 2KM. That feels much better.

About 8 more kilometers to go, I was asked to stop to answer nature's call. They said that they were ready to get out of me. I asked one household if I could use their comfort room, "sure" they said, with a big grin. I remembered from previous run that after doing this same activity, my legs tightened, so much that it cost me a lot of time walking. I'm glad I was okay this time around.

As I exited the area, I thanked the very generous family. I saw a woman running about 100 meters ahead of me. “Oh no you don't”, I recalled talking to myself. No offense intended, but I don't want to be passed by anyone anymore knowing that I still have lots of energy left in me. As I increased my pace, I realized that Bruce was so ahead of me this time. I wanted to catch up with him at least we could reach the finish time together since I owe him my survival in this run. But as I got near him, he increased his pace, its then I knew that he was having his 2nd wind, the competitor side of me suggested that he's thinking of finishing ahead of me. I was challenged by my belief and this time I'm going to finish this race with a bang. I think I was doing 6 min/KM in that last 3KM. Arrived at 6:04 PM, that’s 14 hours for an 18th of 32 overall rank.

I'm very thankful for the DARS running group for everything. But my journey isn't done yet. I still have to eat and find a way to get back to Cebu with what's left of my pocket. As I arrived at the resort, I asked the owner to give the same food I ate for breakfast. Fortune again was at my side, it was his brother's wedding and said that the food was for free. That was a very heavy meal indeed (lechon paksiw, menudo, salad and a big 1 full plate of rice that's good for 3 people). I wasn't sure though on how much he's going to charge me for my stay and for my breakfast. I was too tired to asked him, so came the next morning I counted my money, 875 php. Yes, I thought that it was enough. It was time to leave so I asked the owner, "salamat kaayo sa tanan, pila gani tanan bai?". "Kuan lang na, 500 lang tanan na."... Aguroy Igang. Oh my, I then dutifully give him 500 pesos. I paid 100 pesos for the driver as promised. He was the one who brought me to the resort after the run and he promised to fetch me that morning. 275 pesos left and I still need to go Cebu City. I was mentally and physically drained but gathered myself at least the fare from Siquijor to Dumaguete was only 120 pesos, I then asked my mom from Moalboal to send me 500 pesos thru Palawan Pawnshop and promised to pay her soon.

Was it all worth it? It was more of a self-inflected pain that masochist usually do. But there are certain things in life that no matter how less important it might be to you, it’s a very treasured experience for others. For me, it was an eye opener. An experience that I can use in my next run, in my everyday life as a person, as a husband or even as a father to me children. You can't go to war half prepared.

I 'll try to remember as much as I can since it's now more than 3 months since my fastest marathon to date, plus it was on my running sandal. I was hesitant at first because I have never used that sandal over 30K even in practice runs. The idea was to listen to my body and follow a comfortable pace.
I also planned to do negative split, so on my first half I wasn't thinking of how I fare with other runners. Most of them I know were faster than me anyway. But as I approached the last 15K of the course, I just felt that I might break the 5-hour mark for the first time. And since i wasn't feeling tired, i even increased my pace and was amazed to overtook many of the faster runners from previous marathons that i have joined.

The host called out for one male and one female to dance the infamous "Gangnam Style" song, i then pulled my wife without hesitation and to make this story short, we won two gas burners from Pryce Gas. It was a good day for a Marathon PR and it was even a better ending to have won that prize.

Looking for the right training program that suits my schedule was not easy. I had to revise every now and then until I stuck with my own comfortable program as I kept in mind that it’s better undertrained than being injured. Weeks after of using KAI running sandals, I realized that my foot, particularly my ankle area were getting stronger and stronger. Sticking to what’s working, I gradually increased my mileage on sandals. Running regularly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays while joining fun runs on Sundays. Sometimes, I could also do bike ride on Sundays.

I was still 171 lbs at that time and wanted to shed off some pounds for my 100k debut so I give it a try. Thingking that I might able to win some consolation prizes. I claimed my prize long before the results were made. I persuaded my wife that I am winning this year’s Biggest Loser challenge and if it’s okay if I'd buy a new pair of running shoes. She can then collect my winning prize during the final weigh in. Fortunately I was able to cast off 20lbs and got the 2nd place with only 1 week remaining before 100K gunstart.

Then we’re off to Alcoy at Philip Romanos’ house (a very generous officemate offering their rest house for free). I was wearing our black LEAR Runners Shirt, a blinker, a headlamp, a bottle of water mixed with “hydrite”, a celphone, Sketchers sports watch, my old New Balance (sounds weird) running short and of course my KAI running sandal. This was the original plan, to run the whole route on KAI, but at the same time change if the situation calls for it. At exactly 6PM, we were released, I stayed at the last pack until I’m thoroughly warmed up. People along the road where very welcoming and encouraging. Some even prepared cheering chants, some calling us idol, while others were congratulating us as if we’ve already crossed the finish line.

My plan was to run for 14 minutes then walk for 1 minute regardless of whether its flat, downhill or even uphill course. I was hitting the first 20K on target, 9 minutes per KM pace. Then the road starting to get rough, I found it very hard to walk on them with my sandals but our support crew was nowhere to be found. It was already 10PM and still no sight of them so I text them to find us, I beadly needed to change footwear. It was nearing 30K when they finally showed up. I was definitely mad on how things were going with our crew but I stayed focus, grab some stuffs and told them to get back at us more frequently. I slightly changed my plan, this time to run 13 min then walk for 2 minutes. I was getting some kind of momentum at this point and was at a faster pace, possibly at 7min/km. Reached KM 40, did not stayed long but the hot porridge they prepared was definitely delicious. It was in this area where I met the leadpacks.
They’re I met our crew for only the 2nd time. I advise them to please look for us constantly especially now that it’s already the 2nd half of the race and that we're already tired. After getting some supplies, I stopped at KM 50 grabbed a cup of porridge and drink a cup of coffee. Stayed there more that 10minutes for a reason I did cannot understand. I felt tired during that unusual long rest but decided to create another run/walk strategy just to maintain my focus to and move forward minimizing stops. This time it was an 8-2 run/walk which was working until I hit the 80KM marked at 11:59 hours. Almost 3 hours ahead of my 80KM run in Bohol.

<span style="font-family: "Agency FB","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt;">The
topic in our Quality Management class was very timely. We were discussing
the meaning of quality and it simply meant “<span style="font-family: "Copperplate Gothic Bold","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt;">PERFORMANCE OVER EXPECTATION<span style="font-family: "Agency FB","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt;">”. A very concrete example of quality is
if you have joined last Sunday’s Estancia Ibabao Duathlon. I was
definitely expecting less but found myself grinning in delight the entire
course of the race and in high spirits.

<span style="font-family: "Agency FB","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt;">I
knew about this event on the last day of the registration period,
but luckily I knew some friends living near the registration site and asked
them to register for me and a friend. I could have shared this
information to the LEAR Runners Club but it was the last day of registration,
so that was it.

<span style="font-family: "Agency FB","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt;">RACE
DAY!!!

<span style="font-family: "Agency FB","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Agency FB","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt;">I
rode on my motorcycle to the office to get my bike and pedaled to the venue an
hour and a half earlier. When I arrived, some bikes were already lined up
in the rack, while some participants got there body marked with numbers
corresponding to their category and bib numbers. This way it would be
easier for the organizers to record the # of loops the participant have
made. I was in bracket A (40 yrs old below) under mountain bike category
under race # A79. I placed my bike in the bike rack, got my body marked
and ate my breakfast (a spanish bread and bottle of Sparkle). It rained, it
shined then we were off to go. Being used to running on sandals, I found
myself struggling with the 1st run on shoes but recovered in the
next loop. I was able to overtake several runners, actually I was
counting more than 40 of them.

<span style="font-family: "Agency FB","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt;">I
arrived fresh and was ready for the bike ride, then dragged my bike to the
designated mounting area and started pedaling. I’ve heard a man shouting,
“Nganong gipadakan man daan imong plaka oi.”. He was correct but I can’t
change it anymore and just thought that I’ll make sure of it next time. I
planned not to exert too much effort and just follow my pace. I was already
puffing on the first loop and was thinking of slowing down but I kept my pace
until I realized I only need one loop more before the second run. After 6
loops on bike I felt relieved to be running again which I knew was my
forte. I was never a cyclist before, it was just last May 2012 when an
ultra runner friend sold me his MTB at a very low price and that’s how I was
able to own one.

<span style="font-family: "Agency FB","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt;">Coming
off the bike, I found it hard to walk at first and running was even
harder. Should I stop and rest like most people were saying or just move
on and hope the feeling moves away? I chose to do the latter but found
that the numbness and pain mixed up. My hams started to stiff, but I
ignored them and changed my foot strike which eases the pain in a way until I
got my groove again and started overtaking more runners. When I looked
back, I saw two familiar faces, Ervin and Yaz. I waited for them and we
sprinted our way to the finished line. Yaz (literally barefoot) got the
12th place, Ervin (who gave me his bike bib for the pack lunch) got
13th and I was 14th for our category.
<span style="font-family: "Agency FB","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt;">It was supposedly a 52K road/trail LSD organized by our CUC president but I opted not to join the trail part of the planned route since it would be the farthest distance that I’d be running on KAI. The run taught me a lot about long distance running on sandals. Aside from hearing stories from Miyox, a TNF 100 finisher who shared his own experiences about barefoot/minimalist running, I also have many realizations from my 1st hand experience. Realizations that would be very helpful in my preparations for the 100K run this coming November.
